AIR & USB/Serial Devices

I’ve spent the whole last night on the search for any information about AIR using a USB/Serial device for data exchange.
After endless hours I came to the conclusion that AIR is not capable of using any external devices. I’m not talking about Mic’s or Camera’s neither USB harddrives. This is one of the most vital parts for the one project that I need.

Does anyone know about any solution / drivers or anything that could enable AIR to communicate with other devices?

I also recall a post by Mike Chambers saying that AIR 2.0 would bring some of these functionalities can anyone confirm that?

Thanks for your input

  1. Check out the Merapi project. It allows integration between Java and Flash and thus you should be able to use your USB devices. The major drawback for me is the need to start the JAVA app but perhaps this will change in the future…

  2. I heard these information about AIR 20.0 as well, that Air will be supporting bluetooth and other protocols as well as device access.

  3. Yes,AIR can’t use usb device, but flash is active plugin ,so flash can use usb device by other programe, such as c++.

  4. your best bet is merapi because you can use flash as a ui to your java app and run it on linux, mac, win…

  5. Hi,
